Investing.com -- The United States and Ukraine have agreed on a deal that will allow the US access to Ukraine’s natural resources. This agreement, reached on Wednesday, is an effort by Kyiv to strengthen President Donald Trump’s backing in its ceasefire negotiations with Russia.
The two countries signed an agreement on April 30 to form the United States-Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund. This economic partnership is a recognition of the substantial financial and material support that the US has given to Ukraine in defense against Russia’s full-scale invasion. The partnership aims to combine the resources, talents, and capabilities of both countries to speed up Ukraine’s economic recovery.
Under President Trump’s leadership, the Treasury Department and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) will collaborate with the Government of Ukraine to set up the program’s governance and advance this crucial partnership.
U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent announced the signing of the economic partnership agreement, citing President Trump’s relentless efforts to secure lasting peace. He emphasized that the agreement sends a clear message to Russia that the Trump administration is committed to a peace process that centers on a free, sovereign, and prosperous Ukraine in the long term. He further stated that no entity or individual who financed or supplied the Russian war effort would be allowed to benefit from Ukraine’s reconstruction.
The United States and the Government of Ukraine are eager to put this significant economic partnership into action swiftly for the benefit of both the Ukrainian and American people.
Bessent further stated that the partnership would enable the United States to invest alongside Ukraine to unlock Ukraine’s growth assets, mobilize American talent, capital, and governance standards. This would enhance Ukraine’s investment climate and hasten its economic recovery. The Development Finance Corporation will participate and assist in establishing this fund in collaboration with the Government of Ukraine. The agreement, he reiterated, clearly signals to the Russian leadership that the Trump administration is committed to a peace process that prioritizes a free, sovereign, and prosperous Ukraine over the long term
