Intel stock extends gains after report of possible U.S. government stake
Investing.com-- U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration is discussing with Iran the possibility of holding talks this week on a potential nuclear deal and an end to the war with Israel, Axios reported on Monday.
U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi could meet as part of the proposed talks, Axios reported, citing four sources briefed on the matter.
While the meeting is yet to be finalized, it represents a last-ditch effort by Trump to lower hostilities between the two Middle Eastern powers and bring the focus back towards a nuclear deal.
Trump presented a largely heated rhetoric towards Iran, stating that “everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran,” while also chiding Iran for not accepting an earlier nuclear deal his administration had offered to the country.
Trump has also repeatedly stated that Iran will not be allowed to enrich any uranium, despite Tehran’s claims that it has no plans to develop nuclear weaponry.
Israel attacked Iran late last week, undermining nuclear talks and drawing bitter retaliation from Tehran, especially over attacks against the country’s nuclear facilities.
Focus was initially on whether the U.S. would directly join the war, amid repeated calls from Israel to do so. But the White House clarified on Monday that it will not directly join the war.
Fighting between Iran and Israel was some of the worst in over 30 years, with Iran also cancelling weekend talks with the U.S. following Israel’s attack.
