Trump announces trade deal with EU following months of negotiations
Investing.com-- Hon Hai Precision Industry Co (TW:2317), pouplarly known as Foxconn (SS:601138), has recalled hundreds of Chinese engineers from its iPhone assembly plants in India, potentially disrupting Apple Inc’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) manufacturing ramp-up in the region, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
More than 300 Chinese staff have been sent home over the past two months, with only a few Taiwan-based support workers remaining, the report stated.
While reasons for the move remain unclear, it follows Beijing’s informal push to restrict the outflow of skilled labor and tech exports to countries like India and Vietnam, Bloomberg reported.
The recall could slow down workforce training and technology transfer at a critical time, as Apple prepares to scale production of the upcoming iPhone 17. Foxconn is also building a new facility in southern India.
Apple has been planning to build most iPhones for the U.S. in India by late 2026, a move that President Donald Trump has criticized.
Foxconn notified the Indian government about the recall of its Chinese staff but did not disclose the reasons behind it, the Bloomberg report added.
