Uber stock surges after Nvidia partnership announcement
Investing.com -- General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) announced plans to bring eyes-off driving technology to market by 2028, with the feature debuting on the Cadillac ESCALADE IQ electric SUV.
The announcement came during GM’s Forward media event in New York, where Chair and CEO Mary Barra and other senior leaders showcased advancements in AI, robotics, energy, and autonomy.
GM stock ticked up 0.5% following the news.
The automaker has already mapped 600,000 miles of hands-free roads in North America, with customers having driven 700 million miles using its Super Cruise technology without a single reported crash attributed to the system. The company also benefits from technology and validation frameworks from Cruise, which has accumulated more than five million fully driverless miles.
Starting next year, GM vehicles will feature conversational AI with Google Gemini, allowing natural communication with the vehicle. The company plans to later introduce its own custom-built AI that can be fine-tuned to vehicle intelligence and personal preferences.
In 2028, GM will launch a new centralized computing platform, beginning with the Cadillac ESCALADE IQ. This platform will unify all major vehicle systems on a single computing core, providing 10 times more over-the-air software update capacity, 1,000 times more bandwidth, and up to 35 times more AI performance for autonomy and advanced features.
The company is also advancing its robotics capabilities at the Autonomous Robotics Center in Warren, Michigan, and a lab in Mountain View, California. More than 100 specialists are developing systems trained on decades of GM production data.
For energy solutions, most new GM electric vehicles can provide backup power to properly equipped homes, with future capability to supply power back to the electrical grid. Starting in 2026, the company will offer the GM Energy Home System through leasing, with terms to be announced later.
Meanwhile, Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) is developing its own autonomous driving technology, with CEO Jim Farley previously stating the company aims to introduce Level 3 hands- and eyes-off highway driving by 2026. Ford’s current BlueCruise system offers Level 2 hands-free highway driving on select models, with BlueCruise 1.5 adding fully automated lane changes without driver input.
