Investing.com -- Seagate Technology Holdings announced a £100 million investment in Northern Ireland to advance nanophotonic innovations for next-generation hard drives, with an additional £15 million in funding from Invest NI.

The five-year research and development project will strengthen the regional economy in Derry/Londonderry while enabling Seagate to further develop its Mozaic 6+ technology, which is critical for meeting growing global storage demands driven by hyperscale data centers and AI applications.

"In today’s AI-driven world, not only is the volume of data growing—the value of data is also evolving as companies rethink what it means to train AI models and store new, valuable data," said John Morris, CTO of Seagate Technology. "Our Northern Ireland facility is a global center of excellence, producing more than a quarter of the world’s recording heads and conducting groundbreaking semiconductor laser research."

The investment will accelerate the development of hard drives with capacities from 60 TB and lay the foundation for 100 TB drives, according to Morris.

Kieran Donoghue, Chief Executive of Invest NI, noted that the organization has worked with Seagate for over 30 years to develop the Londonderry site into a world-leading manufacturing and research center.

The joint investments will create new, highly skilled jobs in research, development, and manufacturing at Seagate while strengthening the local supplier network through increased use of regional materials and labor.

Fergus O’Donnell, VP of Wafer Operations NI, said the renewed commitment "opens new opportunities for our community as we continue to invest in a world-class team and cutting-edge facility at the site."

As part of the Smart Nano NI consortium, Seagate collaborates with regional universities including Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University to develop innovative methods for increasing product efficiency and intelligence, contributing to advances in areas such as healthcare, analytics, and diagnostics.
