  • Ethereum client developers said on Thursday that the Dencun upgrade will not be implemented this year.
  • The developers stated that more work needs to be done, including changes to the codebase from the Ethereum client Prysm.
  • On the other hand, the execution layer team said they are prepared for the upgrade, highlighting possible conflict within the devs.

Ethereum client developers announced on Thursday that the Dencun upgrade will not be implemented before the end of the year. The delay is due to more work needed and a conflict between the developer clients for the consensus layer and the execution layer.

This revelation came during the All Core Developers call on Thursday. The consensus layer client team disclosed they did not feel comfortable having a full client fork on the Goerli testnet. They said the delay is due to the varied amounts of work needed, including changes to the codebase from the Ethereum client Prysm, which powers 45% of consensus layer clients.

Pseudonymous Prysm developer Potuz stated, “There is no way we are forking mainnet in 2023.” Per the details of the call, Potuz’s statement mirrored the views of other core developers. The consensus was that adequately testing the update before the December holidays was improbable.

In the last several months, ten developer networks (devnets) have been set up to test the update. Potuz emphasized that “not a single one of them has gone smoothly,” pointing out the ongoing consensus concerns that have surfaced on these networks.

Conversely, the execution layer client teams claim that they are well-prepared for the impending testnets. Speaking for the team, Lightclient, a Geth developer, said, “We are in a pretty good place; a lot of things are also on Master now.” Master is the primary digital workspace for the Go Ethereum project, where the code files and revision history are kept.

This week saw the release of Devnet 10, with plans for the execution clients to go to a larger test on the Goerli testnet. However, the consensus on the call could mean the plans would stall, highlighting recent Ethereum developers’ teams’ challenges.

Last month, the Ethereum developers delayed the launch of the Holesky, citing a mismatching of some parameters. With the Dencun upgrade delay, Ethereum could face market pressures in the wake of the mounting issues on the blockchain.
