In an internal note, Nio Inc. (NYSE:NIO) has reportedly blamed an employee for allegedly using the company's servers to mine the cryptocurrency Ethereum illegally. According to CnEVPost, this has been going on since February of 2021.

The internal notice was shared by a blogger and revealed that the company's compliance and risk management department received a complaint on September 1, 2021, about the employee.

NIO's notice said that the conduct is suspected of being illegal and negatively impacting the company's system security and business information security, adding that the employee admitted to his actions.

Mining cryptocurrency is currently banned in China. The company reportedly said that the server manager used the convenience of his position as administrator of a cluster of servers to mine Ether and profit from it.
