Meta To Launch Microblogging Site; Could this Spell Doom for Twitter?

  • Meta Platforms is rumored to be releasing a microblogging app similar to Twitter.
  • The app will reportedly use Instagram’s account system to automatically fill in a user’s information.
  • Experts believe that the app will see a successful launch and steady growth.

In an interesting turn of events, Meta Platforms is rumored to release a microblogging app similar to Twitter. According to various reports, this new platform is set to be launched on Thursday. This reveal comes at an interesting time as Elon Musk just announced a restrictive limit to the number of Twitter posts users can view on the platform.

Taking a dig at Musk and the current state of Twitter, Meta Chief Product Officer Chris Cox remarked, “We’ve been hearing from creators and public figures who are interested in having a platform that is sanely run, that they believe that they can trust and rely upon for distribution.” Twitter, ever since Musk’s takeover, has faced various challenges and criticism. The recent limit to reading posts as per subscription status seems to have thinned out user patience.

Since early January this year, the social networking giant was apparently developing the app, which they believe is their answer to Twitter. The app known currently as ‘Threads’ appears on the Apple App Store and will reportedly be using Instagram’s account system to automatically fill in a user’s information.

Leveraging its two billion monthly active users on Instagram, experts believe Meta could easily advertise the microblogging site to its current users. It is estimated that even if only a small percentage of Instagram’s current users take to “Threads,” it could be enough for the platform to establish a successful launch and grow rapidly.

This new launch could be terrible news for Twitter as it currently enjoys a complete monopoly in the microblogging sphere. Smaller platforms such as TruthSocial and Mastodon have not proven to be competitors to Twitter despite celebrity and political endorsements. However, Meta, with its vast resources and tactical strategies could prove to be a fatal competitor for the bird app. Also, Meta has displayed a history of borrowing features or ideas from other social media platforms and outperforming them.

Crypto Twitter however has not taken the news positively as most users in the space align with Musk rather than Zuckerberg. “Problem with METAs #Threads is unless you’re a woke hard leftie, you’ll be banned in minutes. @elonmusk has rejuvenated free speech (with some bumps). META will farm your data and sell it to the highest bidder. I’ll keep my Twitter thanks,” said one DOGE fan.
