Investing.com - Confirming earlier rumours, Meta Platforms boss Mark Zuckerberg announced yesterday that the Instagram app will soon host NFTs.
"We're working on bringing NFTs to Instagram in the near term," he said during a panel at the South by Southwest festival in Austin on Tuesday, according to crypto sites. Zuckerberg warned, however, that "I'm not ready to announce exactly what it's going to be today."
Zuckerberg also reportedly said at the same event that "hopefully" in the coming months, Instagram members will be able to mint their own non-fungible tokens (NFTs) within the app.
Remember that in January, the Financial Times had reported that Meta was working on plans for Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) and Instagram members to be able to post NFTs on their profiles, citing sources familiar with the matter. In addition, Meta had said last year that its metaverse, which the company is now focused on building, will include the use of NFT.
It is also worth noting that in December, Instagram head Adam Mosseri confirmed that the company was "actively exploring" NFTs with the aim of bringing the technology to a wider audience. "I think it's an interesting place to play and also to hopefully help creators," Mosseri said in an Instagram story at the time.
It's also worth noting that Twitter already enabled NFT profile pictures for premium users earlier this year.
