Polygon Announces Network Rehashing and Bridge Resync: Report

  • Polygon announces the zkEVM Mainnet Beta Network Rehashing and the Polygon Bridge resync updates.
  • Both the rehashing and the resync will take place on September 18, 2023 (Monday).
  • The Rehashing is carried out as a bug was discovered in an early version of the executor, v.1.1.x.

The blockchain platform Polygon has been creating ripples in the crypto universe with its cutting-edge moves, over the past few weeks. Adding to the list, Polygon has shed light on the upcoming network rehashing and layer 2 Bridge resync, via a X (Twitter) thread.

As per the official announcement, the blockchain’s zkEVM Mainnet Beta Network Rehashing and the Polygon Bridge resync are scheduled for September 18, 2023 (Monday). While the event would take place at 10.30 am (CST) or 8.30 am (UTC), its approximate duration will be 6 hours. Along with the declaration, the platform guaranteed that the rehashing would not affect the overall existence of the ecosystem, asserting, “This does not impact the state of the network or any past transactions or any L1 information”.

Though the platform had scheduled the network rehashing for September 12 initially, it was postponed, realizing the necessity of executing a resync in the L2 Bridge. Pointing out the reason for the reschedule, Polygon cited, “Along with the mainnet rehashing, it will be necessary to do a resync of L2 in the Bridge. We want to ensure minimal downtime for the same.”

Earlier today, the platform confirmed that the rehashing, along with the resync would take place in the succeeding week. Polygon asserted that the zkEVM Mainnet Beta Network Rehashing is carried out as a bug was discovered in an early version of the executor, namely v.1.1.x, which resulted in a “mismatch of L2 block’s hashes”. While elucidating the expected aftermath of rehashing, the platform cited,

“What happens when the rehashing is done? The network will resync from genesis, and the state of the transactions stays the same but the L2 block hashes will be changed with the correct calculations. This already has been done on the testnet, all hashes got corrected and synced.”

In related news, Polygon Labs officially announced the implementation of Polygon 2.0, with the unveiling of three Polygon Improvement Proposals (PIPs). The feature intends to revolutionize the Ethereum block space.
