  • YieldMax files for launching a Bitcoin Options Income Strategy ETF (YBIT).
  • The ETF intends to seek current income and exposure to specific exchange-traded products (ETP).
  • YBIT involves a synthetic covered call strategy ETF, distinct from the traditional covered call strategy.

The financial firm YieldMax has reportedly submitted an application to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to launch a Bitcoin options income strategy ETF (YBIT) on the New York Stock Exchange. As per the Chinese reporter Colin Wu, YieldMax’s recent move involves a “synthetic covered call strategy ETF based on other spot Bitcoin ETFs.”

According to the registration statement, the company primarily intends to seek current income through the YBIT. Moreover, YieldMax views seeking exposure to specific exchange-traded products (ETP), envisioning potential investment gains. The statement further expanded, “In addition, the strategy is designed to produce higher income levels when the Underlying ETP experiences or Underlying ETPs experience, as applicable, more volatility.”

Notably, an underlying ETP includes an ETP that invests both directly and indirectly in Bitcoin. However, the firm has cautioned investors to be reminded that no underlying ETP is subject to the protections of the 1940 Act. Further, it added,

The Fund does not invest directly in Bitcoin or any other digital assets. The Fund does not invest directly in derivatives that track the performance of Bitcoin or any other digital assets. The Fund does not invest in or seek direct exposure to the current “spot” or cash price of Bitcoin. Investors seeking direct exposure to the price of bitcoin should consider an investment other than the Fund.

At the end of 2023, YieldMax filed for the first Bitcoin yield ETF, the Options Income Strategy ETF (MSTR). The ETF focuses uniquely on the derivatives of MicroStrategy, a company that holds a substantial amount of Bitcoins. YieldMax introduced the synthetic covered call technique via the Options Income Strategy ETF. The strategy focuses on generating income by buying call options and selling options.
