Investing.com-- UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Scotland on Monday, where he will push for progress on a final deal to reduce tariffs on British steel, the Financial Times reported on Thursday.
Trump arrived in Scotland on Friday for a five-day trip, ahead of a formal state visit in September. According to the report, Starmer will also raise the issue of tariffs on Scotch whisky and seek to deepen broader U.S.-UK ties.
Talks between U.S. and UK officials have intensified in recent days, with Downing Street aiming to secure a breakthrough on steel tariffs, currently set at 25%, lower than the global 50% U.S. rate, the report said.
Trump has said he and Starmer would meet to "refine the trade deal we made."
The two leaders are also expected to discuss the Middle East and potential U.S. tariffs on pharmaceuticals, the FT report said.
However, UK officials see limited near-term progress in pharma talks, citing domestic regulatory hurdles, the report added.
