Investing.com-- The U.S. cancelled President Donald Trump’s planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin after Moscow sent a memo to Washington maintaining its hardline demands for a ceasefire with Ukraine, the Financial Times reported on Friday.
Trump and Putin had earlier this month agreed to meet in Budapest, Hungary, to discuss an end to the Russia-Ukraine war. But Trump had abruptly canceled the summit just days later.
The FT report showed that Russia’s foreign ministry had sent a memo to Washington maintaining its hardline demands for a ceasefire, which include territorial concessions, demilitarization in Ukraine, and guarantees it will never join Nato.
The U.S. then cancelled the summit following a call between Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the FT reported, citing three people familiar with the matter.
Rubio also reportedly told Trump that Moscow had shown no willingness to negotiate.
U.S. attempts to broker a Russia-Ukraine ceasefire have gained little traction this year, despite Trump’s earlier claims that he will end war within days.
The U.S. president also had a tense meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier this month, but U.S. military shipments to the country were seen continuing.
