Fed’s Powell opens door to potential rate cuts at Jackson Hole
Investing.com -- UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has expressed support for Rachel Reeves to continue as chancellor "into the next election and for many years after" following an incident where she was seen crying during Prime Minister’s questions.
The statement came after Starmer initially declined to confirm whether Reeves would remain in her position until the next election while addressing MPs in the Commons.
In a later interview with BBC Radio 4’s Political Thinking, Starmer clarified that he works "in lockstep" with Reeves and believes she is "doing an excellent job as chancellor."
A spokesperson for Reeves explained that she had been dealing with a "personal matter" during the Commons session.
Starmer emphasized that her emotional response had "nothing to do with politics" or recent welfare U-turns that could impact her Budget plans.
"She’s done an excellent job as chancellor and we have delivered inward investment to this country in record numbers," Starmer said. "She and I work together, we think together."
The prime minister also addressed speculation about tension between them, noting: "In the past there have been examples of chancellors and prime ministers who weren’t in lockstep. We’re in lockstep."
