Investing.com -- China has accused some European Parliament members of "grossly interfering" in its internal affairs following a meeting between European lawmakers and Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te last week.

In a statement released Monday, China’s mission to the European Union expressed firm opposition to any official exchanges between the European Parliament and Taiwan authorities, urging the EU to adhere to its political commitments to China.

"Recently, some members of the European Parliament went to Taiwan, which seriously violated the One-China Principle and grossly interfered in China’s internal affairs," the mission stated.

The controversy stems from a meeting that took place in Taipei last Tuesday, where President Lai met with members of the European Parliament’s Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield. During their discussions, both parties addressed shared values of freedom and democracy, as well as threats from "external infiltration."

Beijing maintains that Taiwan is part of its territory, a position that Taipei rejects.
