Investing.com -- U.S. President Donald Trump spoke to journalists on Friday about his upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, suggesting progress toward ending the war in Ukraine might be possible.
"Something is going to come of it," Trump said regarding the meeting, adding that Russia is "not doing business until they get the war stopped."
Trump addressed ongoing attacks in Russia’s war against Ukraine, interpreting them as negotiation tactics. "I think they’re trying to negotiate," he stated, adding that Putin believes the attacks strengthen his position in talks, though Trump disagreed, saying "I think it hurts him."
On the question of territorial disputes, Trump emphasized that "Ukraine has to decide territory." He also mentioned the possibility of security guarantees "along with Europe."
When asked about business discussions with Putin, Trump indicated he would only address those topics "if we make progress," noting that Putin "is interested in Trump economy."
Trump added that there "could be severe consequences" if the meeting is not successful, though he did not elaborate.
