indicators, debt and currency market moves and political events may affect African markets on
Wednesday.

GLOBAL MARKETS
Asian stocks stepped back on Wednesday after two sessions of
sharp gains as investors tempered their optimism about the
coronavirus while death tolls were still mounting across the

WORLD OIL PRICES
Oil bounced back on Wednesday, with U.S. crude jumping over
$1, lifted by hopes that a meeting between OPEC members and
allied producers on Thursday will trigger output cuts to
shore up prices that have crumbled amid the coronavirus

SOUTH AFRICA MARKETS
South Africa's rand firmed by more than 2% on Tuesday, in
line with a broad rally in emerging market currencies and
other riskier assets on hopes of a slowdown in the spread of
the coronavirus in some countries. CORONAVIRUS FUNDS
Nigeria has requested $6.9 billion from multilateral lenders
to combat the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on Africa's
biggest economy, the finance minister said on
Monday. MARKETS
The Kenyan shilling KES= weakened on Tuesday amid thin
market activity and shorter trading hours, a consequence of
measures taken to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus
in the east African country, traders said. ECONOMY
Kenya's economic growth will slow to 3% or less this year
from an earlier forecast of 6.1% due to the effects of the
novel coronavirus, its finance minister said on
Tuesday. MINING
Glencore's Zambian unit Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) will
shutter its mines on Wednesday following disruption from the
COVID-19 pandemic and low copper prices, it said in a
statement, after the country's mines minister earlier
criticised the closure. AIRLINES
Ethiopian Airlines Chief Executive Officer Tewolde
Gebremariam said on Tuesday the airline lost $550 million
from January to April because of the coronavirus
