His interest in equities grew while in college and over the two-plus years he worked as a stockbroker for William Blair & Company. In 1983, John founded Ariel at age 24 to focus on patient, value investing within small- and medium-sized companies. While Ariel’s research capabilities have expanded across the globe, patience is still the disciplined approach that drives the firm today. John is active civically and professionally based on his belief that these engagements make him a better leader and a better investor. He is a member of the board of directors of Nike, The New York Times Company and Ryan Specialty. John also serves on the board of trustees of the University of Chicago and the Obama Foundation. Biography Matthew Sauer, MBA, Managing Director and Co-Portfolio Manager, joined Lateef in 2012 and became an owner in 2013. Prior to Lateef, Matt spent six years as a Portfolio Manager at Ariel Investments and thirteen years at Oak Value Capital Management as an Executive Vice President, Senior Portfolio Manager and Director of Research. Mr. Sauer is Chairman of the Investment Committee and a Finance Committee Member of Adler Planetarium. He is also a Member of the Finance, Audit and Investment Committee of the Chicago School of Professional Psychology and serves on Lawrence Technological University Business School’s Board of Advisors. Matt received a B.S. degree in Humanities from Lawrence Technological University and his MBA from Duke University.

Biography Eric McKissack is a Founding Principal, and serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer of Channing Capital Management, LLC. Mr. McKissack has over 25 years of investment experience. Mr. McKissack was formerly Vice-Chairman and Co-Chief Investment Officer of Ariel Capital Management, a Chicago-based investment management firm with over $10 billion in assets under management in 2003, specializing in equities. In this capacity, Mr. McKissack served as the portfolio manager responsible for the Ariel Appreciation Fund and various institutional separate accounts. Prior to joining Ariel Capital Management in 1986, Mr. McKissack worked for five years as a research analyst for First Chicago and First Chicago Investment Advisors, led by Gary Brinson. Mr. McKissack received a B.S. in Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MBA from the University of California at Berkeley. He has also earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
