U.S. natural gas pipeline projects boost LNG takeaway capacity in 2024

Investing.com -- The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported on Monday that the completion of natural gas pipeline projects in 2024 led to an increase in the country’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) takeaway capacity. The capacity, which indicates the maximum volume of gas a pipeline can transport from a production area or storage facility daily, increased by 17.8 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd).

In 2024, the U.S. set a record by producing 103.2 bcfd of gas and consuming 90.4 bcfd of the fuel, as per the data from the U.S. EIA. The agency also pointed out that the total pipeline capacity additions outpaced the prior year’s additions for the second consecutive year.

The EIA stated that the completion of projects in the U.S. natural gas-producing regions of Appalachia, Haynesville, Permian, and Eagle Ford contributed to the increased takeaway capacity. These projects enhanced the capacity by about 6.5 bcfd, facilitating the delivery of natural gas from the production regions to demand centers in the mid-Atlantic and along the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Furthermore, five pipeline projects that were completed in Texas and Louisiana last year added to the capacity to deliver natural gas to LNG export terminals by approximately 8.5 bcfd. The EIA also mentioned that several other relatively small interstate and intrastate pipeline projects contributed to an almost additional 3.0 bcfd increase in the capacity.
