OpenAI partners with American Federation of Teachers on AI initiative

Investing.com -- OpenAI has joined forces with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) to launch the National Academy for AI Instruction, a five-year initiative aimed at equipping 400,000 K-12 educators with AI skills.

As the founding partner, OpenAI is contributing $10 million over five years, including $8 million in direct funding and $2 million in in-kind resources such as engineering support, computing access, and technical guidance. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), Anthropic, and the United Federation of Teachers are also supporting the initiative.

The Academy will establish a flagship facility in New York City and plans to launch additional hubs across the United States by 2030. It will serve as a national center for free training and curriculum development, combining classroom expertise with technology.

According to a recent Gallup study, six in ten educators are already using AI tools and report saving an average of six hours per week.

"AI holds tremendous promise but huge challenges—and it’s our job as educators to make sure AI serves our students and society, not the other way around," said Randi Weingarten (NYSE:WRI), President of AFT.

The initiative aims to support over 400,000 educators in developing practical AI fluency by 2030, offering workshops, online courses, and hands-on training sessions. It will prioritize access for high-needs school districts.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, Randi Weingarten, President of AFT, and Michael Mulgrew, President of UFT, signed the agreement to launch the Academy on June 10, 2025.

"Growing up in Saint Louis, my high school computer science lab is where I first got curious about AI—mostly thanks to an incredible teacher who pushed me to experiment," said Altman. "Educators make the difference, and they should lead this next shift with AI."

The initiative builds on ongoing collaboration between OpenAI and AFT to support free and accessible tools for educators.
