TotalEnergies invests in U.S. sustainable forestry to offset emissions

PARIS - TotalEnergies (NYSE:TTE) has signed an agreement with Arkansas-based NativState to conserve forests across the southern United States, according to a press release statement issued by the company.

The transaction includes 13 Improved Forest Management projects covering 100,000 hectares (247,000 acres) across Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. The land is owned by more than 280 private family forest landowners who will receive sustainable income as an alternative to heavy timber harvesting.

The investment aims to support sustainable forest practices, including preserving high conservation value forests, implementing streamside management practices, improving forest species diversity, and conserving wildlife corridors. The program will provide forestry management education and technical support to landowners while giving them access to voluntary carbon markets.

Carbon credits generated by the project will be certified by the ACR, an internationally recognized carbon crediting program, and acquired by TotalEnergies. The company plans to use these credits from 2030 onwards to voluntarily offset part of its remaining direct Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

Adrien Henry, Vice President Nature Based Solutions at TotalEnergies, said the company is "thrilled to support NativState to scale up their operations, directly benefiting the environment and their local communities."

This investment aligns with TotalEnergies’ plan to invest $100 million annually to build a portfolio of projects capable of generating at least 5 million metric tons of CO2e carbon credits per year by 2030.

The partnership aims to provide financial benefits to small landowners while promoting sustainable forestry practices that improve carbon stocks in a region where heavy timber harvesting is common practice.
