Investing.com-- China is open to continuing trade talks with the U.S. after positive results from recent dialogue in Geneva, commentary published in the People’s Daily, the Communist Party’s official newspaper, showed on Tuesday.
The commentary welcomed the tariff deescalation between the two countries, stating that the Geneva talks were a great start to paving the way for continued negotiations and ironing out trade and economic imbalances.
“The road ahead may not be smooth, but China is ready to work with the US side to take this high-level economic and trade meeting as a good foundation,” an English translation of the commentary piece said.
The People’s Daily is regarded as a direct mouthpiece of the Chinese Communist Party, with Tuesday’s commentary piece reflecting increased optimism in Beijing over the recent trade deescalation. Washington agreed to lower its tariffs on China to 30% from 145%, while Beijing brought down its U.S. tariffs to 10% from 125%.
But despite the deescalation, U.S.-China tariffs still remained at historically high levels, leaving the door open for more negotiation between the two countries.
The People’s Daily highlighted that a healthy trade relationship was in line with the interests of both the U.S. and China, and was conducive to global economic growth.
Still, the commentary also noted that the U.S. needed to “thoroughly” correct its practices of unilateral tariff increases, and needed to work with China for mutually beneficial policies.
