Investing.com-- Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and U.S. President Donald Trump will hold a summit meeting on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Canada from June 15 to 17, Kyodo News reported on Monday, citing multiple government sources.
The summit is expected to focus on resolving tensions over U.S. high tariffs, particularly on Japanese automobile exports, the report said.
Japan continues to press for the elimination of additional tariffs but is reportedly open to negotiated cuts, especially in the automotive sector, a key pillar of its exports, according to the report.
Ahead of the summit, Minister of State for Economic Revitalization Ryomasa Akazawa will travel to Washington on June 13 for his sixth round of ministerial talks. Akazawa has visited the U.S. for four consecutive weeks and will head to Canada afterward to continue coordination with Ishiba.
The U.S. has so far resisted full tariff removal, citing trade imbalances with Japan, the Kyodo report added.
