Trump to impose 100% tariff on China starting November 1
Investing.com-- U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday evening that he was open to working with the Democrats on their healthcare policies, but that they must allow the government to reopen from an ongoing shutdown.
Trump continued to blame the Democrats for the shutdown, which he said should “not have happened.”
“I am happy to work with the Democrats on their Failed Healthcare Policies, or anything else, but first they must allow our Government to re-open,” Trump said in a post on Truth.Social.
“In fact, they should open our Government tonight!”
The U.S. government entered a partial shutdown last week after a Republican-backed spending bill failed to pass through the Senate, amid heavy resistance from the Democrats, who called for the continuation of healthcare and insurance subsidies.
The shutdown is now set to mark one week on Wednesday, with lawmakers having marked little progress towards passing a spending bill. The Senate closed its Monday session with no spending bill being passed.
Trump’s comments on Monday echo the Republican party’s rhetoric, that healthcare subsidies be discussed separately and later. But Democrats have warned that a discontinuation of subsidies will greatly increase healthcare costs for millions of Americans.
Several government functions were disrupted by the shutdown, including the release of key labor market data that was scheduled for Friday.
