Investing.com -- The presidential race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump is highly competitive, with both candidates receiving almost equal support, according to a CNN poll conducted by SSRS.
The media outlet said in an article that Harris is backed by 48% of likely voters, while Trump follows closely with 47%.
Other candidates, such as Libertarian Chase Oliver and Green Party's Jill Stein, garner minimal support, CNN reported.
CNN states that Harris' support seems to rest on her personal appeal, while Trump's support is rooted in his strong economic track record and a loyal voter base.
The poll shows that 72% of Trump supporters are voting for him rather than against Harris, whereas 60% of Harris' supporters are primarily backing her rather than voting against Trump, CNN said.
In the independent voter segment, CNN said Harris has a slight edge, leading Trump by 4 points. They add that a gender gap persists, with independent women favoring Harris and independent men leaning toward Trump.
In addition, Harris is said to lead with younger voters, Black, and Latino demographics, CNN noted.
The poll highlights the candidates' strengths in specific areas. Voters trust Trump more on issues like the economy, immigration, and foreign policy.
However, Harris is seen as stronger on topics such as abortion rights, CNN reported.
Furthermore, CNN said 41% of voters consider the economy the most crucial issue, with inflation as the top economic concern.
CNN states in its article that "voters who prioritize the economy, regardless of whom they support for president, are broadly focused on inflation."
