GLOBAL MARKETS

Global shares slid on Thursday as a fresh row between

Washington and Beijing over U.S. bills on Hong Kong could

complicate their trade negotiation and delay a "phase one"

deal that investors had initially hoped to be inked by

WORLD OIL PRICES

Oil prices retreated on Thursday after gaining more than 2%

in the previous session on bullish U.S. crude inventory

data, as a fresh spat over Hong Kong fuelled concerns of a

South Africa's rand weakened on Wednesday, reflecting gains

by the dollar, while stocks tread water as worsening

U.S.-China relations fuelled demand, weakening demand for

riskier assets and weighing on world markets. OIL/DUBAI

Nigeria's former attorney general Mohammed Adoke has been

arrested in Dubai, his lawyer said, seven months after

Nigeria's anti-graft agency issued a warrant for his arrest

as part of an investigation into one of the oil industry's

biggest suspected corruption scandals. MARKETS

The Kenyan shilling KES= gained against the dollar on

Wednesday with dollar supply from diaspora remittances and

offshore investors buying stocks exceeding dollar demand

from merchandise importers, traders said. BUDGET

Kenya's Treasury has raised 66 billion shillings ($650.89

million) out of a target of 78 billion in dividends and

retained earnings from state corporations, the acting

finance minister said on Wednesday. MARKETS

The Ugandan shilling UGX= extended its stable trading on

Wednesday, drawing support from sluggish demand for hard

currency from players in the interbank market and typical

large importers like fuel firms and

Islamist militiamen killed at least 19 people overnight in

eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, stepping up attacks on

civilians in response to a military campaign against them in

border areas with Uganda, local officials said on

lost in their long struggle for autonomy as they voted on

Wednesday in a self-determination referendum that tests

Ethiopia's ability to manage ethnic demands after more than

eighth time of a prominent Tanzanian journalist arrested in

July in a case his lawyers and rights group say is

Zimbabwean police on Wednesday used batons, tear gas and

water cannon to beat up and disperse supporters of the main

opposition party who had gathered outside their party

headquarters in the capital to listen to a speech by their

Zambia's central bank raised the country's benchmark lending

rate by 125 basis points to 11.5% on Wednesday, citing

rising consumer price inflation and the need to restore

Ivory Coast's cotton output for the 2019/2020 season is

forecast to hit a record 510,000 tonnes, up from about

468,000 tonnes in the previous season, the cotton ginners'
