GLOBAL MARKETS
Stocks fell and the dollar advanced on Thursday after the
Federal Reserve pledged to keep interest rates low for a
long time but stopped short of offering further on stimulus

WORLD OIL PRICES
Oil prices fell on Thursday, after rising in the two
previous sessions, as concerns about weak fuel demand
re-emerged after production platforms in the southeastern
United States took steps to resume output following

SOUTH AFRICA MARKETS
South Africa's rand rallied to a six-month high on
Wednesday, shaking off poor retail sales data as
expectations of continued lower rates in the United States
fed risk demand globally. CORRUPTION
Nigeria plans to form an agency to manage the hundreds of
millions of dollars in assets seized domestically or
returned from abroad following anti-corruption probes, the
justice minister said on Wednesday. MARKETS
The Kenyan shilling KES= was little changed on Wednesday,
and was expected to gain ground, helped by companies
converting their dollars to pay taxes at the end of the
week, traders said. POLITICS
Kenya's 47 country governments will shut down some of their
services and close hospitals to new patients after their
representatives in the Senate failed to resolve a dispute
over a new scheme to share revenue between them. MARKETS
The Ugandan shilling UGX= was steady on Wednesday as
inflows of hard currency from exports of commodities like
coffee, tea, and gold offered support. SECURITY
Prisoners in a Ugandan jail overpowered their guards and 219
of them escaped with at least 15 guns, but two were killed
after security forces launched an operation to recapture
them, a military spokeswoman said on Thursday. POLITICS
Paul Rusesabagina, portrayed as a hero in a Hollywood movie
about Rwanda's 1994 genocide, may face 25 years to life in
prison if convicted of various offences, the prosecution
said. ECONOMY
Ghana's economy contracted for the first time in almost four
decades in the second quarter, by an annual 3.2%, as
coronavirus restrictions stalled activity, the statistics
office said on Wednesday. MALI SECURITY
Mali's ruling junta said on Wednesday that it had started
the process of naming an interim president, after West
African presidents threatened a total embargo on the
landlocked country. IMF
The International Monetary Fund said on Wednesday it had
approved immediate disbursement of $1 billion to Angola
under an existing program and increased its total funding
access by $765 million to help it grapple with the
coronavirus pandemic. SOUTH SUDAN FINANCE MINISTER
South Sudan President Salva Kiir has removed the country's
finance minister Salvatore Garang from office, replacing him
with Athian Ding Athian, state television reported on
