SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: NASDAQ:AMD) has announced a collaboration with JR Kyushu Railway Company, where the AMD Kria K26 System-on-Module (SOM) is being utilized to modernize track inspection processes. The AI-powered solution aims to increase the efficiency and precision of safety inspections for the Japanese bullet train operator's extensive network.

JR Kyushu, responsible for managing over 1,455 miles of railroad tracks, has traditionally performed track inspections manually. In pursuit of enhanced safety, the company has adopted a technology-driven approach using a solution developed by Tokyo Artisan Intelligence (TAI). This innovation involves a vision computing box, mounted on a cart, that leverages the AMD Kria K26 SOM for rapid image processing and advanced AI capabilities to identify track anomalies such as loose bolts at operational speeds of up to 12 mph.

The embedded platform of the Kria K26 SOM includes a custom AMD Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC, DDR memory, and other features designed for durability and adaptability to the varying conditions of JR Kyushu's rail system. The implementation of this technology signifies a shift from the labor-intensive, foot-based inspections to a more cost-effective and operationally efficient method.

Chetan Khona, AMD's senior director of Industrial, Vision, Healthcare, and Sciences Markets, pointed out that JR Kyushu's adoption of the Kria SOM exemplifies the transformative potential of edge AI computing and programmable SOMs in automating and optimizing various applications.
