Palantir to report; Trump on Nvidia chip exports - what’s moving markets
Investing.com -- Japan’s Nikkei 225 index closed above the 50,000 level for the first time on Monday, a milestone that U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged during his meeting with Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama in Tokyo.
"It’s an honor to be here on the day it went over 50,000," Bessent told Katayama during their meeting. "Congratulations," he added.
Bessent, a former hedge fund manager who made substantial profits betting against the yen in the 2010s, noted his long history with the Japanese market, saying, "I’ve been coming since 1991."
The Treasury Secretary arrived in Japan on Monday evening as part of an Asia tour led by President Donald Trump. The meeting with Katayama marked their first in-person encounter since she assumed office last week.
