Investing.com -- Boeing (NYSE:BA) has announced the appointment of Don Ruhmann as the new Chief Aerospace Safety Officer, effective immediately.

In his new role, Ruhmann will be tasked with enhancing Boeing’s safety culture and practices. He will also be responsible for the continued development of the company’s Safety Management System (SMS), and for working with the broader industry to strengthen the aviation safety ecosystem.

Ruhmann replaces Mike Delaney, who recently announced his retirement after nearly 40 years at Boeing. Delaney will continue to serve in an advisory role to help with the transition over the next few months. As the new Chief Aerospace Safety Officer, Ruhmann will report to Boeing President and CEO Kelly Ortberg and join the company’s Executive Council.

Kelly Ortberg, Boeing President and CEO, commented on the appointment, stating, “Over the past several years, we’ve made important strides to strengthen our safety practices, safety culture and actions to implement SMS at Boeing. Don’s experience with airplane design, certification and strong relationships with global regulators makes him perfectly suited to lead and build on those efforts at Boeing and across the industry.”

Prior to his new role, Ruhmann served as the vice president of Airplane Development at Boeing Commercial Airplanes. In this position, he led design and certification work for the latest members of the 737 MAX family and the new 777-9. Ruhmann joined Boeing in 1989 and has held several senior leadership positions, including Engineering roles on the 777 and 787 programs and in Commercial Aviation Services, which is now part of Boeing Global Services.
