Investing.com -- Meta Platforms’ TBD Lab consists of "a few dozen" researchers and engineers working on next-generation foundation models, according to Chief Financial Officer Susan Li.
Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology conference on Tuesday, Li explained that the team name was originally a placeholder that eventually "stuck" because it appropriately reflected how much of the team’s work remains to be precisely determined.
"We conceive of it as sort of a pretty small, few-dozen-people, very talent-dense set of folks," Li told investors at the conference.
The TBD Lab team is focused on advancing AI models to the frontier of capabilities over the next one to two years, Li added.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg has personally led an aggressive talent recruitment effort for the initiative, making offers to startups and directly reaching out to potential candidates through WhatsApp with million-dollar compensation packages.
In July, Zuckerberg announced, "We’ve established Meta Superintelligence Labs, which includes our foundations, product, and FAIR teams as well as a new lab that is focused on developing the next generation of our models."
