Japan PPI inflation slips to 11-mth low in July
Investing.com -- Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) confirmed Wednesday it is laying off as many as 9,000 employees in its latest workforce reduction effort. The cuts represent less than 4% of the tech giant’s overall workforce, a Microsoft spokesperson revealed to Investing.com.
“We continue to implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company and teams for success in a dynamic marketplace,” the spokesperson said.
Microsoft believes that reducing the number of workers, specifically in management, will help streamline operations and encourage employees to utilize tools, such as AI, to complete tasks.
This represents the largest round of layoffs at Microsoft since 2023, and follows two previous waves of job cuts in May and June, when Microsoft eliminated more than 6,000 positions, marking the beginning of a shift toward agentic AI usage in efforts to cut costs and boost efficiency.
The company employs over 228,000 people worldwide. Microsoft stock is down 0.3% as of 10:10 ET.
