Asia FX rises; US-Japan trade deal boosts yen, won to 2-week highs
Investing.com-- Nintendo Co Ltd (TYO:7974) said on Tuesday evening that its Switch 2 console sold over 3.5 million units worldwide just four days after its June 5 launch, making it one of the fastest-selling consoles ever.
Nintendo said the Switch 2– which retails for $449.99– was its fastest-selling video game console. The Japanese videogame giant had earlier said it expects to sell about 15 million Switch 2 units in its first year. The console has now covered over 20% of that goal within its first week of launch.
Still, the strong sales brewed increased concerns over supply shortages of the Switch 2, especially given that Nintendo had earlier warned of such a scenario due to trade tariff disruptions in the U.S. and China.
Nintendo’s shares fell over 3% in Tokyo trade on Wednesday.
Nintendo said in April that 2.2 million people in Japan had entered the lottery to purchase the Switch 2 on launch day, which was well above what the company will be able to deliver to stores.
The Switch 2 is a follow-up to 2017’s Switch console, and retains a bulk of its predecessors features with better internal specifications. The Switch was wildly successful, and has sold about 152.1 million units since its launch, making it the third best-selling console of all time after Sony’s Playstation 2 and the Nintendo DS.
