Moody’s downgrades Senegal to Caa1 amid rising debt concerns
Investing.com -- Romania’s energy minister has stated that the country’s nuclear power projects, which have U.S. backing, should not be impacted by recent criticism from members of President Donald Trump’s administration regarding a cancelled election. The minister’s comments come in response to concerns about potential effects on ongoing projects.
State-owned nuclear power producer Nuclearelectrica, based in Romania, has signed a main engineering contract worth 3.2 billion euros. This contract is for the construction of two 700 MW nuclear reactors by 2032. The project is backed by a consortium of four firms, which includes the U.S.-based Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) and Sargent & Lundy.
In addition to this, Nuclearelectrica has plans to construct a small modular reactor plant (SMR) by 2029. This project will utilize technology from another U.S. company, NuScale Power SMR.N. This could potentially be the first instance of such technology being used in Europe. The U.S. EXIM Bank and International Development Finance Corporation have committed to financing this project.
When questioned if the criticism from the U.S. could affect these projects, Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja stated, "Not as far as we are concerned." He further added, "These projects involve large American companies and we believe that regardless of the political context it is in the interest of the United States for these projects to continue."
