Investing.com -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has closed its 14-month investigation into Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s Waymo self-driving vehicles without taking further action, the agency announced Friday.
The investigation, which began in May 2024, examined 22 reports of Waymo robotaxis allegedly violating traffic safety laws or showing "unexpected behavior." Among these reports were 17 collisions, including incidents where vehicles struck "clearly visible objects that a competent driver would be expected to avoid."
In its decision to close the probe, NHTSA cited two recalls Waymo had already issued. One recall addressed a collision with a utility pole, while another in May involved more than 1,200 vehicles receiving software updates to improve detection and avoidance of roadway barriers such as chains, gates, and similar obstacles.
The investigation had focused on potential traffic safety law violations, unexpected responses to traffic control devices, and issues when Waymo vehicles entered construction zones.
"At Waymo we are committed to prioritizing safety and we’re pleased that NHTSA has concluded their investigation and closed our case," a Waymo spokesperson said Friday.
