S&P 500 climbs, but Nvidia slip keeps lid on gains
Investing.com -- A federal judge dismissed criminal charges against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James on Monday, ruling that the prosecutor who brought the cases had been illegally appointed.
U.S. District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie ruled that Lindsey Halligan’s appointment as interim U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia was unlawful. The charges were dismissed without prejudice, which means prosecutors may be able to refile the cases in the future.
President Donald Trump installed Halligan in September after her predecessor resigned under pressure to bring charges against Comey and James. Halligan was the only prosecutor who secured separate grand jury indictments against both officials.
The court’s decision represents a significant legal setback for the cases against the two high-profile figures, though the "without prejudice" dismissal leaves the door open for potential future prosecution through proper channels.
