Investing.com -- A military commissioner in eastern Siberia is in critical condition after being shot at a recruiting center on Monday, as resistance to Russian President Vladimir Putin's mass mobilization continued.
The incident happened in the city of Ust-Ilimsk near Lake Baikal in eastern Siberia, one of Russia's poorer regions. Recruiting has reportedly been especially aggressive in such regions, in order to compensate for a lower draft quota in the country's more prosperous cities further west.
The shooter, Ruslan Zinin, was arrested at the scene, according to police footage circulating on social media.
The shooting is the most extreme act of resistance yet to the 'partial mobilization' announced last week by Putin to shore up his faltering invasion of Ukraine. Since then, some 2,000 people have been arrested at demonstrations against the draft across the country.
