Investing.com -- U.S. President Donald Trump expressed confidence that Britain would defend the United States in a conflict but questioned whether European Union nations would do the same, he told the BBC in an interview published Tuesday.
Trump cited this uncertainty as a key factor in his decision not to sign a trade deal with the EU, while granting Britain some exemptions from his tariff program.
"I believe that the UK would fight with us," Trump said in the interview. "I think that they would be with us. I’m not sure that a lot of the other countries would be."
He also voiced continued doubts about NATO members’ commitment, despite recent agreements to increase defense spending.
"One of the problems with NATO, as I said, we have to fight for them, but will they actually fight for us if we had a war?" Trump questioned.
