Michael co-authored “Factoring Probability” with Lisa Goldberg and Ran Leshem; it was published in Risk-Based and Factor Investing in 2015. He was the sole author of “The Case for Global Stock Portfolios,” published in the Journal of Indexes in 2011.

Biography As Co-Head and CIO of Aperio, Ran directly oversees portfolio management, research, trading, and technology while working closely with Liz Michaels to oversee the day-to-day operations and set the overall strategic direction for Aperio. Ran began his career as a management consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he modeled consumer markets and large complex decisions. From there, he worked for Woosh!, a startup business that enabled merchants to sell their products through various web channels. He also spent three years at Orient Overseas Container Line and two years at The Gap, where he built decision-analysis systems using forecasting and optimization to improve operations and inventory management.

Biography Patrick Geddes is Aperio Group's CEO and Chief Tax Economist, and a Partner. Prior to joining Aperio Group, Patrick was the Chief Financial Officer of Morningstar, Inc. Patrick also served on the company's executive committee, overseeing all strategic, policy, and internal investment decisions. Prior to being named CFO, Patrick served as Morningstar's Director of Quantitative Research. Before Morningstar, he spent five years with Amoco, now part of BP, in the US and Europe providing quantitative analysis, currency hedging, and corporate tax optimization. At Amoco, Patrick was part of a group that modeled the nuances of highly complex international tax structures as part of the company’s efforts to manage taxes as effectively as possible, which in the energy sector can provide enormous payoffs to the bottom line and shareholders. He has taught numerous courses in graduate-level finance at the University of California Berkeley Extension. Patrick received his MBA, with honors, from the University of Chicago. A fine day for Patrick would include hiking or bicycling, followed by cooking an interesting meal with Mediterranean, Indian, or Thai flavors, followed by reading either literary fiction or a good book on brain functioning.
