Investing.com -- According to Statistics Canada, travel between Canada and other countries, including the United States, saw a decrease in February 2025. The number of trips made by US residents to Canada declined by 5.3% year over year, totaling 1.1 million trips. This is the first decrease in arrivals to Canada by US residents since March 2021.
In terms of travel modes, most trips undertaken by US residents in February 2025 were via automobile (72.8%) or by air (24.2%). Automobile arrivals, which totaled 777,700, were down 6.5% year over year, ending a four-month growth streak that began in October 2024. Conversely, air arrivals slightly increased by 0.6%, totaling 258,500.
The number of overseas residents visiting Canada also saw a significant decrease in February 2025, falling by 17.2%. This is the largest decrease in a series of declines that started in October 2024. The majority of these arrivals (89.0%) were by air. The decrease in overseas arrivals was primarily due to fewer arrivals from Asia and the Americas (excluding the United States), which fell by 27.3% and 27.2% respectively.
In February 2025, the highest number of overseas visitors came from France (37,800), followed by the United Kingdom (TADAWUL:4280) (33,600) and Mexico (26,100). These three countries accounted for 35.4% of all overseas arrivals in Canada during that month.
Canadian residents also made fewer trips abroad in February 2025. The number of return trips from abroad, combining the United States and overseas, declined by 11.2% compared with the same month in 2024. Of these return trips, 59.8% were by air, a decrease of 1.6% year over year. The number of return trips by air from the United States was down 7.9% from February 2024. However, the number of return trips by air from overseas increased by 3.2% compared with February 2024.
In February 2025, return trips from the United States by automobile (1.4 million) declined by 22.5%, marking the first year-over-year decrease since March 2021. Of these trips, 69.2% were same-day trips.
Using seasonally adjusted data, Statistics Canada reported a 9.5% decrease in non-resident arrivals in Canada in February 2025. During the same period, the number of returning Canadian-resident arrivals fell by 4.8% from the previous month.
In February 2025, Canadian residents made 2.2 million return trips from the United States, a decrease of 17.7% from February 2024. These return trips represented 64.1% of all trips taken by Canadian residents during that month. Meanwhile, trips to Canada by US residents, which totaled 1.1 million, represented 79.5% of all non-resident travel to Canada in February 2025.
