April sees fewer U.S. travelers entering Canada as tariffs take toll

Investing.com -- The preliminary number of international arrivals to Canada by air and automobile in April 2025 was 4.5 million, marking a 15.2% decrease from April 2024. This represents the third consecutive month of year-over-year declines.

Non-resident arrivals to Canada by air in April 2025 totaled 632,600, a 1.2% year-over-year decrease. This figure includes arrivals by US residents, which was 289,300, a 5.5% decrease from the same month in 2024. However, arrivals by overseas residents increased by 2.8% to 343,400.

There was a notable spike in US-resident arrivals on April 17 and April 18, 2025, with a daily average of 13,300, which is 27.6% higher than the average for other Thursday-Friday periods of the month.

Canadian-resident return trips by air from abroad in April stood at 1.8 million, a slight decrease of 1.7% from the same month one year earlier. Despite an increase in return trips from overseas countries (1.3 million, up 9.9% from April 2024), return trips by air from the United States declined in April 2025 to 582,700, a 19.9% decrease.

US-resident trips to Canada by automobile in April showed a decline of 10.7% from the same month in 2024, with a total of 820,700 trips. This marks the third consecutive month of year-over-year declines.

Canadian-resident return trips by automobile from the United States in April totaled 1.2 million, a steep decline of 35.2% from the same month in 2024. This marks the fourth consecutive month of year-over-year declines.

In April 2025, arrivals to Canada by US residents by air decreased 5.5% from the same month in 2024, while arrivals by automobile decreased 10.7%. Canadian-resident return trips by air fell 19.9% in April 2025 compared with the same month in 2024. Canadian-resident return trips by automobile dropped 35.2%, marking the fourth consecutive month of year-over-year declines.
