Investing.com-- China ramped up its criticism of Japan over the weekend, several state media reports showed, threatening economic consequences amid a steadily worsening spat over Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s comments on Taiwan.
Japan, on the other hand, was seen seeking calm, with local media reports stating that Tokyo will send envoys to Beijing this week.
The PLA Daily, widely considered as a mouthpiece for the Chinese military, warned in a Sunday article that Japan risked turning its entire country into a battlefield if its military intervened in the Taiwan Strait.
Additionally, China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism on Sunday also warned against travelling to Japan.
This comes after Beijing sharply rebuked earlier comments from Takaichi that China’s use of force against Taiwan could be seen as a “survival-threatening situation-” a scenario that allows Tokyo to deploy its Self-Defence Forces.
The comments were made during a parliamentary session on November 7, with Takaichi having since declined to retract the statement.
Her comments were at the heart of the row, with China having soon after summoned Japan’s ambassador to protest Takaichi’s comments. Last week, China also warned that Japan would suffer a “crushing military defeat” if it intervened in Taiwan.
Other state-linked media also largely continued to target Takaichi. Taiwan is a contentious issue for China, with Beijing repeatedly claiming that the East Asian island is part of its territory.
Taiwan is located close to Japan’s westernmost islands and is near key shipping lanes for Tokyo. Japan also hosts the largest U.S. military presence outside the United States.
China’s travel warning sparked losses in Japanese tourism stocks on Monday. The country is a major destination for Chinese travelers.
