Investing.com-- U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday his administration was considering distributing rebate checks to American taxpayers, funded by revenues from his new tariffs.
In an interview with OAN News, Trump described the potential payments as a “dividend” for U.S. citizens.
"We also might make a distribution to the people, almost like a dividend to the people of America," Trump said, adding that "We’re thinking maybe $1,000 to $2,000. It’d be great."
Trump claimed that tariff collections were starting to ramp up and could eventually generate as much as $1 trillion annually. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had projected a smaller but still substantial increase, saying duties could bring in more than $500 billion.
Trump also suggested part of the revenues could be used to pay down the national debt. Any rebate plan would need congressional approval.
His remarks came amid a partial government shutdown, now in its second day after Congress failed to pass stopgap funding. The White House has warned of federal employee firings, with potential permanent job cut plans.
