S&P 500 slips, but losses kept in check as Nvidia climbs ahead of results
Investing.com-- President Donald Trump has authorized the deployment of approximately 700 active-duty Marines from the Twentynine Palms and Camp Pendleton bases to Los Angeles in response to ongoing anti‑ICE protests and civil unrest across Southern California.
The move, announced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, places troops in a support role, protecting federal personnel and property and augmenting the 300 National Guard troopers already on-site.
The protests, triggered by ICE raids, escalated over the weekend with demonstrators blocking highways, including the 101 Freeway, and setting Waymo autonomous vehicles on fire.
An Australian journalist was injured by a rubber bullet amid the unrest.
Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass sharply condemned the deployment, describing it as an unconstitutional overreach and announcing legal action against the federal government.
Trump dismissed their concerns, asserting that the operation was essential to restore order and claiming that Los Angeles had been “overrun”.
