Investing.com-- U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday evening that he wants the Keystone XL Pipeline to be built soon, promising easy regulatory processes for the project that was scuttled by the Biden administration over environmental concerns.
In a social media post, Trump said he wanted the company building the pipeline- then-owner TC Energy- to come back to America and build the project. Trump did not name the company in his post.
“Easy approvals, almost immediate start! If not them, perhaps another Pipeline Company. We want the Keystone XL Pipeline built!,” Trump said.
“The company building the Keystone XL Pipeline that was viciously jettisoned by the incompetent Biden Administration should come back to America, and get it built — NOW!”
The pipeline- which planned to bring oil from Canada’s Alberta basin to U.S. refiners in Illinois and Texas- was scrapped in 2021 after the Biden administration revoked a major permit needed for a U.S. component of the project.
The project was opposed by environmental activists, U.S. landowners, and Native American tribes. Critics of the project had argued it would pollute indigenous lands, and would delay a shift towards green fuels.
Trump had approved the project in 2017. Development of the Keystone pipeline had begun in 2008, and was abandoned in the final stages of the project.
The Keystone pipeline entails more Canadian oil imports into the U.S. But this contrasts with Trump’s calls for trade tariffs on Canadian oil imports, with the U.S. President recently warning that 25% tariffs on all Canadian imports will be imposed next week.
