Gold prices edge up amid Fed rate cut hopes; US-Russia talks awaited
Investing.com-- The U.S. Senate passed a President Donald Trump-endorsed rescissions bill early Thursday, trimming up to $9 billion from foreign aid and public broadcasting funding,
The measure now returns to the House of Representatives after a narrow 51-48 Senate vote.
The legislation, long sought by Trump, includes approximately $8 billion in foreign aid cuts and $1.1 billion from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which supports NPR and PBS.
Earlier this week, Vice President J.D. Vance cast tiebreaking votes that propelled the bill past procedural hurdles, essentially breaking a 50-50 Senate deadlock.
Supporters argue the measure is a move toward fiscal discipline, reclaiming taxpayer funds previously approved by Congress. Critics contend it undermines bipartisan spending agreements and could jeopardize essential programming in rural communities, as well as U.S. international aid efforts.
If the House passes it before Friday’s deadline, it would go to President Trump for his signature.
