Apple’s strategy pivot may start with iPhone 17 Air—Evercore

Investing.com -- Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 launch could mark the start of a broader strategic shift in its flagship product line, according to Evercore ISI.

The company is expected to unveil four new models on Sept. 9 at its “awe dropping” event, including the Base, Pro, and Pro Max editions, as well as a new “iPhone Air.”

Analysts at Evercore ISI described the Air as Apple’s “most notable design change to the iPhone in recent years.”

“We expect the Air model to follow a similar guise of Air models seen in the iPad and MacBook product lines and feature a thinner and lighter version of the base model,” the analysts wrote.

They forecast the Air will measure 5.55mm thick, about 35% thinner than the iPhone 16 lineup, making it Apple’s slimmest handset to date.

Across the range, Apple is expected to introduce 120hz ProMotion displays and camera improvements.

Evercore explained that the Base and Air models are set to run on the A19 chip, while the Pro and Pro Max will carry the higher-powered A19 Pro.

The firm’s analysts also highlighted potential changes in design materials, with the Pro line “shifting to a glass-aluminum hybrid frame and away from prior titanium builds.”

Looking further ahead, Evercore ISI said this year’s iPhone 17 event “sets the stage for a multiyear iPhone roadmap” that could include Apple’s first foldable device as early as 2026 and a curved-glass “anniversary” edition in 2027.

The analysts added that Apple may also introduce new Apple Watch models, including a possible Ultra edition, alongside the debut of iOS 26. “We think the launch of the iPhone 17 Air would mark a notable change in Apple’s recent iPhone strategy and could be the start of what we believe is a multiyear road map of notable design changes,” they said.
