Investing.com -- Boeing (NYSE:BA) and Japan Airlines have completed an order for 17 more 737-8 aircraft, aiming to take advantage of the model’s fuel efficiency and flexibility. The order is part of JAL’s strategy to expand its domestic network, which has been experiencing record-breaking tourism. This is JAL’s second order for the 737-8, bringing its total backlog of 737 MAX orders to 38.

Mitsuko Tottori, president of Japan Airlines, stated that the 737 has been a fundamental part of their single-aisle fleet for about 50 years. Tottori expressed excitement about adding more 737-8s to offer customers a safe and refined flying experience.

The 737-8 is known for its market-leading capabilities, including a 15% reduction in fuel use and carbon emissions compared to the Next-Generation 737-800s that JAL is replacing. The common features across the 737 family will allow JAL to smoothly incorporate the 737-8 into its current fleet.

Brad McMullen, Boeing’s senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing, expressed appreciation for the long-standing partnership with JAL. McMullen highlighted that by choosing the 737-8, JAL will realize operational and economic efficiencies, setting them up for future success.

The 737-8 will introduce the Boeing Sky Interior to JAL passengers, featuring advanced LED lighting, larger windows and spacious overhead bins.

JAL, a longtime Boeing customer, currently operates 767s, 777s and Next-Generation 737-800s, and was one of the first airlines to operate the 787 Dreamliner. With over 50 787-8s and 787-9s already in service, JAL recently ordered an additional 10 787-9s to accommodate increasing demand for international travel.

JAL’s subsidiary, ZIPAIR Tokyo, has also announced plans to boost capacity on its international network by adding 10 787-9s, previously operated by JAL, to its fleet. Boeing Global Services has been chosen to carry out interior modifications on these planes.
