Investing.com-- Elon Musk said on Wednesday that Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) has been testing self-driving Model Y cars in Austin, Texas, for several days, and that the model was set to begin delivering itself to customers starting from June.

“For the past several days, Tesla has been testing self-driving Model Y cars (no one in driver’s seat) on Austin public streets with no incidents,” Musk said in a social media post.

“Next month, first self-delivery from factory to customer,” Musk said, stating that the move was a month ahead of schedule.

Musk has repeatedly touted self-driving technology as the next big driver of Tesla’s growth, especially as the company grapples with a sustained slowdown in vehicle sales.

The Tesla CEO had earlier said that the EV maker was also slated to begin testing of its long-promised robotaxi service in Austin from end-June.

But the company is facing heightened scrutiny from regulators over its self-driving claims.

Tesla’s full self-driving technology has been allegedly involved in several collisions in low-visibility conditions since last year, and is under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration over its safety claims.
