Investing.com -- BYD (SZ:002594) introduced 10C ultra-fast charging earlier this week, a technology that allows electric vehicles (EVs) to gain 400 kilometers of driving range with just a five-minute charge.

Built on the company’s new Super-E BEV platform, which features a 1,000V and 1,000A architecture, the system is capable of delivering power output of 1,000kW.

The technology will first debut in the Han L sedan and Tang L SUV in April 2025.

“While this advancement may not significantly boost BYD’s volume in the short term, it lays a foundation for future model launches and showcases that the company is strategically planning for the mass adoption of fast charging in the coming years, as well as offers the potential for a product mix upgrade,” Bernstein analysts said.

According to the investment bank, achieving ultra-fast charging requires both increased voltage and amplified current flow. BYD has optimized both aspects through a combination of material innovations, engineering upgrades, and system integration.

The company introduced high-speed lithium-ion channel technology within its proprietary blade battery, cutting internal resistance by 50%. This was achieved through a re-engineered electrolyte, microporous separator optimization, and micrometer-level electrode restructuring.

Another key advancement is BYD’s next-generation electrical architecture. The company developed a 1,500V silicon carbide (SiC) chip to enable high-voltage efficiency.

The system integrates a newly designed motor capable of more than 30,000 rpm, utilizing enhanced coatings and sensors to improve mechanical strength, thermal conductivity, and energy efficiency. A proprietary algorithm ensures synchronization across the platform.

Lastly, the EV giant introduced an advanced “direct refrigerant” thermal management system, with double-sided, 3D flow channels, doubling the heat exchange surface area and boosting cooling efficiency by 90%. This ensures stability and safety at the 1,000V platform level.

One key feature of the system is that it allows for rapid power delivery without compromising battery lifespan, as the redesigned blade battery offers a lifecycle 35% longer than the previous generation.

The increase in power output also enhances vehicle performance beyond charging speed. The Han L model, for example, now accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds, a marked improvement from the previous 3.7 seconds.

The upgraded e-motor delivers peak power of 580kW, supporting a top speed exceeding 300 km/h, a marked improvement from the previous max speed of 185 km/h.

With the latest breakthrough, BYD positions itself as an industry leader in commercialized ultra-fast charging.

Although competitors such as CATL currently offer 6C technology, BYD remains the only automaker and battery manufacturer with 10C charging capabilities.
